Red Viburnum: A Ukrainian Symbol of Freedom and Independence

  • Gather 757 249 Central Park Avenue, Suite 300 Virginia Beach, VA, 23462 United States (map)

Join us for an afternoon of painting Red Viburnum - a Ukrainian symbol of independence, resilience and bravery.
Together through art we will celebrate the spirit of freedom and bravery of Ukraine’s heroes defending it, and commemorate the third anniversary of Ukraine’s fight against russia’s full-scale war.

The viburnum, or калина, is one of the symbols of Ukraine that embodies life and death. Its red color is also a metaphor for revival and love for Ukraine.
A famous Ukrainian song “Ой у лузі червона калина», originating from a 17th century Ukrainian Cossack song, was a beloved anthem for Ukrainian Sich Riflemen in World War One. Since the start of the russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Red Viburnum, along with the song, have become symbols of national resistance and freedom.

The class is led by our master artist and the Director of Tidewater Ukrainian School, Oleksandra from Kharkiv, Ukraine.

*This class is a part of our ongoing Ukraine Aid fundraiser.*
